The high altitude in Avenas helps with slower, cooler fermentations than the surrounding areas, which leads to gentler, long extractions. He tends to 10 acres spread across the crus of Morgon, Fleurie and Régnié. Sunier’s methods can be distilled into a single quotation: “don’t forget that wine is a grape’s memory, so take care of the land.” He practices “agro-ecology,” working hard to protect the biodiversity and fertility of the soil with the intent of producing wines that reflect the character of terroir. In 1981, his path would be forever changed by Jules Chauvet, a man whom many now call his spiritual godfather. Chauvet was a winemaker, a researcher, a chemist, and a viticultural prophet. It was he who, upon the advent of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the 1950s, first spoke out for “natural wine,” harkening back to the traditional methods of the Beaujolais. Joined by local vignerons Guy Breton, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Jean Foillard, Marcel spearheaded a group that soon took up the torch of this movement. Kermit dubbed this clan the Gang of Four, and the name has stuck ever since. These rebels called for a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification: starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulfur dioxide or none at all, and disdaining chaptalization. Sadly, the end of the 2010 vintage was Marcel’s last. He passed away at the end of the harvest—a poetic farewell for a man that forever changed our perception of Beaujolais. His son Mathieu and daughter Camille confidently continue the great work that their father pioneered, now introducing biodynamic vineyard practices and ensuring that Marcel's legacy lives on.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0044/2492/5255/products/BTKA_16317406912805285_715d52108fb9cd033b2bfb24528a07_f2fdd6a2-52cc-45ce-80e5-c13742551233.jpg?v=1633534629
domaine-de-la-prebende-anna-asmaquer-beaujolais-2019
Domaine de la Prébende 'Anna Asmaquer' Beaujolais 2024
The Anna Asmaquer Beaujolais is an old vines blend with profound minerality, a bright wild berry nose, and possesses typique Beaujolais finesse.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0044/2492/5255/products/image_4fdbe036-9437-470d-9bd2-4af8d710953a.jpg?v=1659361771
stephane-aviron-beaujolais-villages-2020
Stephane Aviron Beaujolais Villages 2020
This big-shouldered Beaujolais is typical of the quality. Anthony’s father left his career as a Mercedes mechanic to support his son’s dream and obvious talent, and he now spends all of his time tending to the vines. There are no treatments in their vineyards aside from copper and sulfur—both legal for organic and biodynamic farming, and accepted practices in the natural wine community; the reality is that if people in Europe didn’t spray copper or sulfur in their vineyards they wouldn’t have any grapes at all.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0044/2492/5255/files/anthony-thevenet-morgon-beaujolais-2024-regular-red-still-wainscott-6384136.jpg?v=1782820149
