The appellation lies above the town of St. Helena on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains that separate Napa Valley from Sonoma Valley and the Santa Rosa Plain. Spring Mountain is similar to the Mount Veeder AVA due to the prevailing cool weather and smaller diurnal changes. The vineyard is located at a 1,600 feet elevation with primarily weathered volcanic soils and high drainage. The mountain terrain along with its cool weather pattern create an environment for Cabernet Sauvignon to have intense dark fruit flavors, satiny tannins and great aging potential.
