The old vines bring an intricate texture and prolonged length that carries generous stone fruit, floral, and tropical basil. Brûlée and filo crust mingle with laser-focused acidity as the through line, drawing it toward an elegant finish defined by complexity.
Phoebe is comprised of the old vine own-rooted Wente clone parcel at Four Winds Vineyard. Picked as late as possible, Wente clone always bursts with acidity and freshness. The own-rooted old vines handle any vintage adversity to remain calm and clear. Fermentation is spontaneous, and the barrel aging long, 18 months, for this oxidative style Chardonnay.
Four Winds Vineyard is isolated on a mountaintop surrounded by forest past the northwestern edge of the McMinnville AVA. The volcanic Saum soils at Four Winds are rare and among the oldest found in the Willamette Walley, composed of ocean-floor basalt that was pushed up to form coastal mountains that have since decomposed and collected in concave formations to create an ancient, desiccated, and mineral-rich soil. These factors combine to impart a distinct high toned, bouyant, and aromatic expression of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Never irrigated and always organically farmed, we continue to minimize and eliminate unnecessary farming interventions. The own-rooted parcels were planted in 1993 to Wente Clone Chardonnay and Pommard Clone Pinot Noir. The grafted Draper Clone Chardonnay and Wadenswil Pinot Noir were planted in 2000.
