Around 5,000 years ago, the Minoans settled the Southern Aegean, including the island of Thira (Santorini). Today, in Crete, farmers are cultivating the ancient variety Assyrtiko which originated from the island of Santorini. Founded in the 1970s by Stelios Alexakis, the Alexakis winery is the single most important wine producer on the island of Crete. Stelios’ sons Lazaros and Apostoli are now in charge of day-to-day operations and tap into both their deep winemaking know-how and uniquely extensive relationships among the small growers of the island to deliver delicious small-production cuvées for the American market that show raw southern Aegean character, incredible value, while also keeping the seriously ancient vinegrowing traditions of Crete alive and thriving.
