All Chêne Bleu wines are grown, hand-picked, made and matured on the estate, the Domaine de La Verrière. The Domaine lies in a privileged spot - a secluded mountain saddle above the little village of Crestet, north-east of Avignon, in the Dentelles de Montimirail mountains. They are on the northern face of the Mont St Amand, above Gigondas, in the foothills of Mont Ventoux, Provence’s highest mountain.
The property lies at 550m, almost 1600ft, making it one of the highest vineyards in the Vaucluse, and in the South of France. The rolling slopes, facing south to the Mont St Amand and south-east to Mont Ventoux, are dominated by the unmistakable, jagged peaks of the limestone Dentelles, which means ‘lace’ in French. From the back of the winery, an uninterrupted panorama opens up to the valley of Vaison-la-Romaine and the fertile plains of the Drôme.
The Domaine lies in a very special place, just where the Rhône and Provence Appellations meet on the southern border of Gigondas. Our high altitude terroir of limestone and clay is unique and exceptional. I find the winemakers and experts who come to visit get very excited! The purity of the environment also means that we can work according to biodynamic principles, creating a healthy, vibrant vineyard.

Fresh but disciplined. A blend of Syrah and Grenache, our Rosé is a finely textured, complex Syrah-Grenache blend. Importantly, it is made in a multi-step process relying on skin contact - a short maceration, not by the traditional saignée method - in order to reveal the full texture and character of the grape variety and give it nice length and structure.

Perfumed and powerful. This rich, oak-aged Roussanne blend is named after Aliot de Montvin, the glassblower who purchased the property in 1427 and changed its name to La Verrière. The high altitude and protracted ripening season led the Domaine to consider planting whites, despite their southern latitude. Many people discouraged this, but fortunately they followed their judgment, and their flagship white has won awards from its first vintage. The rich fruit concentration and freshness take oak well so they decided to make a vin-de-garde.

| We named our Grenache blend ABÉLARD to reflect its forceful, masculine, brooding intensity. Our mature (25 year old plus) Grenache flourishes at this high altitude and at harvest the scent of wild strawberries and black fruit wafts through the winery. We have striven to capture and showcase this highly perfumed aroma.

Héloïse and Abélard are one of history’s most celebrated couples, known for their intellectual brilliance, passionate love affair, eloquent letters and the tragedy that cruelly separated them. Sometimes referred to as “the Romeo and Juliet of France,” they were actually far more complex and accomplished individuals, and their love spanned many decades during the Middle Ages until the end of their lives, making it a symbol of enduring romantic love. The perfumed, intense but restrained character of this Syrah blend reminded us of Héloïse, whose intellect was matched by passion which, though bridled, never died.
